Oakland’s Pot House Shindies turn up the heat this Saturday with host Naes on KALX Live! May 25th.

This weekend, we’ll be visited by Oakland foursome Pot House Shindies.  They’ll play a set of high-spirited tunes for us and then they’ll sit down to chat and share some stories with host Naes.   He will be asking them about the adventures they had while on their recent European gigs.  They’re just back from the UK leg of their tour where they appeared on the bill for the world famous B.O.B. Fest in Bath, England.   But they’re energetic — they never rest!  If you haven’t caught their sounds yet around the Bay Area, catch ‘em on “KALX Live!” this Saturday night with your pals.  (Hey, that’s us!)

Live from The New Parish! Hunx & his Punx, Shannon and the Clams, Fuzz, Peach Kelli Pop & Twin Steps! Hosted by Probono Bonobo & Kendra K. May 18th.

Tonight’s the night!  We’re going to be broadcasting the 3rd night of 1-2-3-4 Go! Records’ Go-Go Fest, live and direct from The New Parish in Oakland!

The Go-Go! silkscreen poster

The Go-Go! Fest poster. (Limited edition silkscreen is available at 1-2-3-4 Go! Records)

This is a KALX Radio Co-announce, so there’ll be some friendly KALX volunteers there, sitting at a table ready to say hello to you, as well!  Make sure to look for them and greet them warmly.

We will be chronicling this — Night #3 —  of this five-night event.  On the bill tonight:

  • Hunx & His Punx
  • Shannon and the Clams
  • Fuzz
  • Peach Kelli Pop
  • Twin Steps

It’s a jam-packed night of entertainment.  Seeing as the evening’s about to become sold out, it’ll be literally a jam-packed crowd too!

So, if you can’t make it down to The New Parish, whether that’s due to ‘Total Occupancy’ restrictions or merely because of geographic constraints, fret not!   Simply tune your handy radio dial on over to your friends at 90.7 fm KALX Berkeley — or navigate your handy computer browser to http://kalx.berkeley.edu/how-listen for an evening that’ll be almost like being there.  Okay, maybe it won’t be quite as crowded — or warm — at your place, but we’ll do our level best to make sure you have a great time listening as the evening unfolds!

We’ll be powering up the special technology and starting our live broadcast right after the Cal Baseball game ends.  With a slated start time of 6 PM, the game shouldn’t be much of an impact on our 9PM to Midnight slot, so we ought to be good to go on time.  We will plan on continuing past Midnight too (at least for a bit.  We’ve cleared this with DJ A Series Of Sevens who comes on right after us.  All hail his epic generosity!)

Let’s try to beat Stanford without going into extra innings!

The Gravel Spreaders with host Deep Mission on KALX Live! May 11th.

This weekend we welcome The Gravel Spreaders to the show.  The lore surrounding this “Metalgrass/Gravel-billy” foursome has plenty of twists and turns but we’ll just tell you this for now: They rose from the swampy mists of the deep south.  Deep South of Market, that is!

GravelSpreaders

Speaking of deep, Deep Mission is hosting.  It’s sure to be something that’ll get your toes tapping and your fists pumping.

Want to hear some of their tracks?  You can!  Check out their Facebook Page, or just click here to land right on their BandPage there.  You can find out even more on their website here: http://www.thegravelspreaders.com/

June 6th will find the band playing over at the Starry Plough (3101 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley)… and that show starts at 8:00 pm.  Their release “Metal Hee-Haw” was number 1 this winter on the KALX charts, too.  They’ll be playing some of their hits from the album, as well as other originals and wildly original cover-versions of their favorite Hard Rock and Metal melodies you’ll definitely recognize.

So tune in this Saturday night for the music of The Gravel Spreaders.  We’ll be starting our week’s fun right after the broadcast of the 7 PM Cal baseball game ends.  We all know predicting the end of a baseball game is an inexact science so, we’ll be ready.  We’re guessing we should have the boys on somewhere around 10 pm, though.  We’ll all find out together… so keep it locked on your KALX Berkeley.  Tune it in however you like.  Your radio: 90.7 fm, online: kalx.berkeley.edu or make your iPhone happy with our KALX App!  Go Bears!

Gravys Drop serves it up this Saturday with host Cia Cia La Pirata! May 4th.

GRAVYS DROP  brings back the fun feeling of music from the 1950′s, 60′s and 70′s, drawing on sounds from all across the rock and roll spectrum.  Influences run from the Everly Brothers, The Beach Boys, Flying Burrito Brothers, to the Flamin’ Groovies, and plenty more.

Their debut cassette on Burger Records “For the Love of Gravy” sold out the day it was released, and has since been repressed numerous times. So tune in for a tasty Saturday night when Billy Grave, Jay Rosen, David Kurtz and Adam Bomb take over the performance studio, giving your ears something delicious to enjoy.  Then, stay tuned as host Cia Cia La Pirata asks them all about their busy schedule of shows they’ll be dishing out over the next couple of months.  Hijinks will undoubtedly ensue.

Guy Fox with host Wobs this weekend on KALX Live! April 27th.

Guy Fox is coming to the KALX performance studio and they’ll be sharing the music from their new EP, “The Wild”.   They’ll be fresh from their Friday night record release party show at the Independent, where they’re appearing with the Tumbleweed Wanderers.

Guy Fox taking a moment to relax.

Guy Fox taking a moment to relax.

Fun, dancy high life vibes, carefree vocals, rich harmonies, hints of old school soul and funk breaks, alt-rock grit… it all swirls together to give you the Guy Fox sound.  The band has been playing with a lot of KALX-appearance alums, including the aforementioned T-weed Wanderers, The Seshen, Big Tree and Ash Reiter… just to name a few.

Nate, Peter, Greg and Charlie will be serving up stories in their interview with Wobs after their set, ready and willing to tell tales of what it’s like being the ‘big deal’ they’re really becoming.  They’re ready.  Are you ready?  If you can’t wait, why don’t you check out their website, their Facebook Page, and their Bandcamp Page.

Come along for the ride Saturday night — the show starts at 9 PM!

Listen online, if you’re geographically challenged.   Just pick your stream at kalx.berkeley.edu.   Listen on your radio at 90.7 fm if you’re hanging locally.   Oh, and HEY!… the App is back in the App Store.  So go get it NOW!  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/kalx-90-7-fm/id354549285?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D6

El Radio Fantastique with host Cia Cia La Pirata on KALX Live! April 20th.

This Saturday night, Marin County-based El Radio Fantastique will be in for a live set and an interview with host Cia Cia La Pirata.

El Radio Fantastique

El Radio Fantastique

Hailing from the West Marin town of Point Reyes Station and fronted by the charismatic singer/songwriter, dumpster-diver and one-time grave-digger bandleader Giovanni DiMorente, this ensemble defies pigeon-holing or single-genre classification.  With influences including DiMorente’s coveted record collection scavenged from abandoned New Orleans tenements, strong familial traits of musicality, and punk rock, El Radio Fantastique owes a lot of its characteristic look & sound to a family narrative handed down from DiMorente’s elders.  It’s a story of an old radio which was said to play beautiful and haunting music from the past, present and future… yet over time it would slowly and methodically possess the listeners, and drive them mad.

Want to hear something from their new album (which incidentally is called Waking the Dead)?  Sure!  Here’s “Isabella”.  Check out the video, which happens to include still shots from a recent appearance of theirs in the North Bay, at last year’s ‘Kinetic Carnevale’.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8C4WYLcw5_U

Find out more about this enchanting band and its players at their website, here:  http://www.elradiofantastique.com

You can also check out their Facebook Page here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/El-Radio-Fantastique/117607558270248

This Saturday night, your radio just might be out to possess you!   Tune in and see what happens.  Either terrestrially at 90.7 fm, or on the gentle and friendly KALX website: http://kalx.berkeley.edu/how-listen.  We promise we won’t drive you mad… purposely.

Glaciers with host Naes this week on KALX Live! Cool! April 13th.

Experimental instrumentalists hailing from San Francisco & Oakland, the foursome known as Glaciers will be sliding into KALX this Saturday night to play a set and have a friendly interview with host Naes.  Known for their loud, climactic live performances, the band members write lots of their music on late, cold nights while the fog settles.  That aesthetic finds its way into their sound.

glaciers

They’re excited to be finished with the mastering on their second release.  Just as their first was, this will also be on vinyl.  We’ll get to hear some of their new songs as they play them live for us in the performance studio.

Learn about the band on their website here: http://soundofglaciers.com/HOME.html.  You can also find them on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/glaciersband.  Plus, at their Bandcamp page, you can hear their entire first release… here: http://soundofglaciers.bandcamp.com/

So why not chill with your pals on “KALX Live!” this Saturday night?  Listen in on your radio at 90.7, online at kalx.berkeley.edu, or however you prefer!  It’s all good.

The B-Stars will be singin’ & swingin’ with host Bison Run on KALX Live! April 6th.

This weekend we welcome San Francisco’s The B-Stars to the program!  Their special sound has a distinct flavor reminiscent of country & western music of the ’40′s and ’50′s, and they’ll be serving up a hearty stew of honky tonk and hillbilly hits for your listening and dancing pleasure.  There’s no room to dance in our performance studio, so you best do your dancin’ at home or in your car.  Make sure to pull over first, unless you’ve had a lot of previous practice in the Dancin’ While Drivin’ department.  Safety first, after all.

The B-Stars

Serving tunes, not time: Uncle Frank & the Co-Defendants with host Deep Mission. March 30.

San Francisco-based Uncle Frank & the Co-Defendants will be serving time — no, make that TUNES — on this upcoming installment of “KALX Live!” with this week’s host, Deep Mission.

The wit and wisdom of Uncle Frank Lauria is showcased on most songs, featuring his modern parables drenched in humor, biting satire and sprinklings of pop-culture references that are true to his beatnik roots.  Uncle Frank read poetry in Greenwich Village & uptown at the Seven Arts Coffee Shop with the likes of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Gregory Corso in the ’50′s.  He’s learned a lot.  He’s willing to share this knowledge and experience, and he does so through his music.  Uncle Frank credits Jack Kerouac with teaching him how to sleep on a bus.

Uncle Frank & the Co-Defendants

The Co-Defendants are:

Jerry Boxley & Dudley Hughes - trading off on guitars, bass and background vocals

Will Morris - on drums

Chris von Sneidern - on guitar and vocals

They’ll all sit down after the set to talk about what’s next for the group, as well as detail their recent performance at the Hotel Utah Saloon.

Tune in Saturday night, either on your radio at 90.7 fm or online at kalx.berkeley.edu and simply click on “Listen”.  Yep, it’s that easy.
